O.C. girl takes 2nd in international student art contest

An Orange County student won second place in her age group in the International Aviation Student Art Contest.

Karen Ahn, 13, a resident of Irvine and a student at St. Margaret's Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, was honored in the 10-13 age category for her depiction of skydivers in keeping with the contest theme, "Silent Flight," focusing on aviation such as light aircraft, gliding and balloons.

Ahn's artwork also had won first place at both the state and national levels.

"We're privileged to honor young artists who use their talent and creativity to depict the world of aviation," said Alan Murphy, director of John Wayne Airport, which coordinated the contest locally.

Artists ages 6-17 from Australia, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States participated in the contest.

John Wayne Airport started an annual art contest in 1990 for Orange County students in kindergarten through high school as part of the opening of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal. In 1996, the airport began coordinating its contest with the international art contest.
