은 학생들에게 Supplemental Essay는 참으로 당혹스러울 수도 있습니다. 대부분의 학생들이 많은 시간을 Personal
Statement에 할애를 하고 입학원서의 Supplemental Section에는 급하게 마무리를 짓는 것을 많이 보아
왔습니다. 이렇게 하면 실제 Application Packet에서 지원자에게 유리할 수 있는 부분을 오히려 역으로 불리하게 만들 수
있습니다.
아래의 Duke University내의 Trinity College의 Application에 대한
Strong Essay의 에 입니다. Supplemental Essay에서 다음과 같이 묻고 있습니다."만일 Trinity
College의 문리대에 입학지원을 하고져 한다면 왜 Duke이 지원자에게 적합한 대학인지를 논하시요. 그리고 Duke가
지원자에게 특별하게 끌리는 하는 무엇인지요? 답을 하나나 두문장으로 대답을 하시요."
실제 위의 질문은 많은 Supplemental Essay의 전형적인 것입니다. 근본적으로 Admission Staff는 왜 그 대학이 지원자에게 특별하게 관심을 갖게 하였는가 하는 것을 알고져 합니다.
위 질문에 대한 훌륭한 샘플입니다.
'When
I visited the Duke campus last fall I immediately felt at home. The
Gothic architecture and tree-shaded walks created an atmosphere of
peaceful but serious reflection. The place is at once Southern?which as
an Alabamian is important to me?and universal as it reflects the
traditions of Europe and the classical world. The Trinity College
liberal arts curriculum also reflects this unique pairing of the modern
South and the global past. For example I am considering a major in
history and am very interested in the combination of geographic and
thematic areas of study offered by Duke's history program. The
combinations of areas offer seeming endless areas of specialization. One
interesting possibility is a focus in the geographic area of the U.S.
and Canada combined with a thematic study of Women and Gender or African
Diaspora. By juxtaposing and intertwining these two foci my
understanding of the American South?and much more?would be greatly
enriched. This innovative and flexible approach to both traditional and
non-traditional subject matter is greatly appealing to me. I know by
reputation and from a friend currently enrolled in Trinity College that
the liberal arts curriculum is very challenging but also rewarding. I
believe I am more than prepared for these challenges and that I will
thrive in this climate. Duke University's campus already feels like
home; I believe that its academic opportunities will also provide a
stimulating environment in which I feel I belong.

듀크만이 가진 특별한 것에 대하여 전혀 논하지 않는 것입니다. Good Essay는 Duke만의 특별하고 유일한 것을 보여 주는
것입니다. 이점에서 Sample Essay는 아주 훌륭합니다. 실제 길이는 하나의 문장이지만 Duke가 왜 지원자가 가고
싶어하는 지에 대해서 세가지 특별한 이유를 말하고 있습니다.

Duke에 다니는 친구가 있다는 것은 입학허가 결정에서는 중요하지 않은 데 실제 지원자는 이점을 우회적으로 표현을 하였읍니다.
첫번째 포인트는 상대적으로 중요합니다. 상당수의 대학이 Gothic 건축양식을 가지고 있고 이는 Duke만이 유일하지 않습니다.
그러나 지원자는 Duke Campus를 Southerness와 연계를 하고 있읍니다.
또한 지원자는 Duke을
가본 적이 있습니다. 실제 많은 지원학생들이 무턱대고 최고의 많은 대학들을 지원을 하면서 캠퍼스 방문을 안 한 경우가 많이
