에세이는 고교생 수준의 진솔한 자기모습 보여줘야

<사진설명> 좋은 에세이를 작성하기 위해서는 대학 입학사정관들이 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 정확히 알고 있어야 하며, 이를 위해 자신이 어떤 사람인지를 스스로 깨우쳐야 한다. 


“나를 알고 상대방을 안다”는 의미로 대입 에세이에서 가장 중요한 근간이 된다고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해 좋은 에세이를 작성하기 위해서는 대학 입학사정관들이 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 정확히 알고 있어야 하며, 이를 위해 자신이 어떤 사람인지를 스스로 깨우쳐야 한다는 것이다.

이는 자신이 어떤 성격을 가졌고, 좋아하는 것은 무엇인지, 장점과 단점은 어떤지, 지난 시간 가장 기억에 남는 일, 어려웠던 순간들, 장래 희망, 자신이 추구하는 이상 등 다각적인 면들을 곰곰히 생각해 봐야 가능하다.

이것들이 정리됐을 때 주어진 주제 중 자신에게 맞는 것을 골라 작성을 시작해야 하는데 그 과정이 곧 시간이기 때문에 충분한 시간을 둬야 함은 물론이다.

여기서 한 가지 꼭 강조하고 싶은 것은 너무 거창한 내용에 얽매이지 않는 것이다. 고등학생 수준의 글을 넘어서려 애쓰지 말고, 있는 그대로 진솔한 자기 모습을 표현하는 것이 가장 좋다. 새로 바뀐 공통원서 주제들을 보면 다음과 같다.

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. [No change]

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? [Revised]

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? [Revised]

4. Describe a problem you‘ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. [No change]

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. [Revised]

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? [New]

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you‘ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. [New]

저마다 다른 내용 같지만 결국 학생 자신을 투영하는 것으로 “나는 이런 사람이다”라는 것을 보여주는 것이다. 사고와 신념, 자신감을 통해 ‘변화’와 ‘결실’을 보여줄 수 있어야 한다.
